"Mater Matuta". Etruscan funerary statue, made of stone from Chianciano in Tuscany. Fifth to fourth century BCE. Three-quarter view from the left. A woman, her hair in braids around her head and dressed in a soft dress, holds her child on her lap. The child appears to be sleeping. The chair she sits in has a sphinx-like lion on either side and their heads form the arm-rest. Parts of the sculpture have been filled in and the note of the back of the original photograph is "After Restoration." This is a representation of the deceased with her child. Late Etruscan sarcophagus lid, from the necropolis of (Civita) Musarna in the Territory of Viterbo. Second or First century BC. "A man in ample himation reclines on a pillow, a libation dish in his right hand. He resembles the "obesus etruscus" so popular in the last two centuries of Etruscan art, but he is in fact relatively slender, with an elongated body and a distorted chest. Much paint remains. Body, arms, hands , and dish have been colored brown, while hair is a strong red and the cap with it's rolled brim is a distinct yellow. There are extensive parallels for this sarcophagus in Italy, The British Museum , in Copenhagen and elsewhere….A curious naturalism and directness underlie this funerary presentation. Behind the superficialities of dress and pose, the face is hardly a specific one, but it is also far from the image of happiness in this world or the next." Now at the MFA, Boston.
